Dear Viv,
Bowden Urban Village - Cultural Mapping
The Land Management Corporation (LMC) recently acquired the 10.25ha Clipsal site at Bowden and the 5.9ha Origin Energy Site (former Brompton Gasworks) at Brompton.
Over the next decade LMC, in conjunction with the private sector, will transform the sites into an inner-city, medium and high density, mixed use village, with the aim of achieving a range
4'-
0, broader policy and strategic objectives outlined within the South Australia Strategic Plan and the 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide .
LMC is finalising the engagement a consultancy team comprising heritage architects and a social historian to record an understanding of the cultural and industrial heritage of the Bowden Urban Village site, comprising both the Clipsal and Origin Energy site. The consultant will focus on documenting the tangible i.e. the structures, artefacts and recent industrial activities on and around the site and the intangible i.e. the stories, the memories and themes relevant to the site.
The primary aim of this 'cultural mapping' exercise is to identify and record elements of historical significance and provide suggestions on how they might be refolded into the development project. We envisage the process will inform opportunities for the re-use of materials in public art projects, heritage trails and visual themes which reflect the' local identity.
To help guide the consultant, LMC will establish a steering group comprising representatives from key local community groups. In the first instance the steering group will work with the consultant to finetune the project scope and identify the stages of work.
We are writing to the Hindmarsh Activist Group to seek a nominated representative who would be interested in actively participating on the steering group. The nominated representative should have a keen interest in local history and be able to disseminate information, and progress of the steering group, through an extensive local network. It is

envisaged the steering group will meet during business hours, approximately 4 - 6 times over a six month period, at a suitable location in the Bowden / Brompton area.
LMC is also seeking participation from the City of Charles Sturt and other community groups including the Hindmarsh Historical Society, Bowden Brompton Community Group, Bowden Residents Action Group, Hindmarsh Greening and the Adelaide & Inner Suburbs branch of the National Trust.
Attached for the information of interested representatives is an outline of the 'terrns of reference' for the proposed Cultural Mapping Steering Group. Should you require further information regarding this matter please contact Andre Stuyt on 8207 0874 or 0411 779 611.
We look forward to a representative from the Hindmarsh Activist Group participating in this unique initiative.
Yours sincerely,
Sandy Rix
