VOTER INTENTION SURVEY

The Council voting papers are out, and I wonder how people are intending to vote.

In particular, I wondered how Mick Atkinson intends to vote – he’s always taken a lively interest in Council affairs – so, after a quick skim thru the Parliamentary Travel Reports for background, I’ve come up with this purely hypothetical result:

hindmarsh wardma
Correct me if I’m wrong….

UPDATE: after listing here, the postie delivered the Wallis leaflet, late Monday night. Voter intentions for this candidate closely resemble the hypothetical 'Mick Atkinson' prediction:

Fwd: Mass Rally on the 31st

Subject: Fwd: Mass Rally on the 31st

Hi everyone - please spread the word to your networks, facebook groups
etc; there will be a mass rally where east meets west at Victoria
Square on 31st October at 1pm to protest against the rampant
destruction of our farmlands and open space by this Labor government.

The western contingent will meet at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel at
11.30am in preparation for the walk into town to meet the eastern
contingent, some of whom are walking all the way from Mt Barker! We
need to make this a really good one and add to the pressure on this
government to change its modus operandi and back down on the land
grabs happening all around Adelaide.

Please pass this onto all the community groups you know that are
concerned about the loss of open space and the influence of
development interests over the government.

Thanks and Regards Kirsten

HI Kirsten and Carol,
The main rally is to be held at Victoria Square at 1pm on Sunday the
31st October. We are walking from Mt Barker to Crafers on Sat 30th,
and then meeting again at Crafers at 8am on Sunday to walk down the
hill and into Vic Square. I don't know how long it would take you to
walk from the Gov to Vic Square - maybe an hour and half? two hours to
be safe?
Anyway, if we can meet at 1pm in Vic Square that would be excellent.
We need to show as much opposition to Holloway and Rann as possible,
strength in numbers! The latest comments by Holloway this week confirm
he is set on his particular agenda - so arrogant and so DETERMINED -
we need to not only continue but to increase our opposition just to
get heard.
We are just printing of a flyer (should be ready today) with all the
walk details on it - I don't have a electronic copy of it but will ask
for one and forward it to you. Would you (or whoever you might
delegate) be keen/interested in addressing the rally on behalf of St
Clair and Cheltenham? We have a meeting tonight and it would be good
to raise the idea of a speaker from each of your groups. What do you
think? I could confirm with you after tonight.
Carol, sorry I haven't replied to your email from a couple of days ago
- I was unable to check emails all of yesterday and have a huge
backlog now. Will work my way through them when I have a chance.
Cheers, SKye

Hi Skye and Carol - thanks very much to the Mt Barker contingent for
again coming to support us on the weekend; it was much appreciated and
we would like to return the favour.

Do you have some details can you send me details for the walk into
Adelaide and the rally on the 31st? I would like to get something out
to everyone asap so that we can get as many as possible walking from
the Gov or catching the tram in if they are not as mobile. Richard
Tonkin had some good ideas about getting everyone to bring something
green from their garden but it would be good to coordinate with
whatever theme you have for the rally, can you let us know what you
have planned?

Thanks and Regards Kirsten

Candidate Posting: Barry Hill

BARRY HILL - HINDMARSH WARD

I am a candidate for the forthcoming City of Charles Sturt Council elections and thank you for the opportunity to write a few words in this local website.
My overiding concern is for the proper management of increasing population density and all the problems that infers. Our Bowden to Kilkenny area is targeted for higher density living. I will work to ensure we have a community that is a nice place to live and grow in, where we care for each other. In other words a village environment within a city. Issues dear to me are;
Residents parking permits for narrow streets.
Retaining our native trees on footpaths. Currently many including my street are scheduled for replacement with exotics that do not attract birdlife.
The state of many footpaths. Too many are difficult for disabled, mothers with prams and the elderly.
Council rate rises kept in line with inflation except in exceptional circumstances.
Retaining heritage buildings.
Decent standards of housing developments. Some in the Brompton area are potential slums in waiting.
Stormwater management.
Traffic flow management.
About me.
I am a married man with 5 adult children. My wife is legally disabled these days giving me a good understanding of people with disabilities. I have lived in high density cities in Indonesia and Hong Kong and observed first hand several ways people co-exist in dense population areas. I am a middle level manager with trade and tertiary qualifications and extensive water industry experience.
I am passionate about our community and will work for you.

I, Barry Hill of 4 Pickering St Brompton, take responsibility for my comments.

HINDMARASH WARD ELECTION 2010

hindmarsh ward
The accompanying  flyer provides the real election leaflet for  Hindmarsh Ward this year.
Candidates may proclaim this or that policy, but it is the property boom that is relentlessly reshaping Hindmarsh, and therefore setting the tasks facing the incoming  Council.
Some observers say that Australian housing prices are 40% over value – and while prices are now trending down interstate, here in South Australia some “hot-spot” suburbs have recorded  percentage rises of double digit levels for 2009-10.
This is a result of capital movements which bear no relationship to the historical norm – bank mortgage finance at 5% - 6%pa. The present asset price bubble is fuelled by speculative capital flows from overseas sources, short term investments by superannuation funds in property trusts, and small scale individual speculation by local property owners. Characteristically, the bubble is justified by a pernicious circular logic in which asset price rises are assumed to constitute an adequate – or even necessary - basis for further rises.
The following chart is drawn from ABS tables. It clearly demonstrates the result of the late eighties asset price bubble on housing construction  in South Australia– that investment is in effect “brought forward” by such booms, and this brought forward investment is at the expense of future investment levels
SA Dwelling Construction75-2010
Housing costs now however are now at a high of six to seven times annual household income. The “Australian dream” is now only possible for a majority of Australians if wage income is supplemented with returns from credit based property speculation, whether real or as “on paper” profits. In the area this reliance is displayed by the churn factor, as one half of residents of the Federal electorate have been residing in the same house for less than 5 years.

  building wealth
BUILDING WEALTH”..DRAWING IN FRESH LAYERS OF PUNTERS investors .
At the urging of the Property Council, major development consortia, and the monopoly media both the Charles Sturt Council and the State Government  have been tireless in facilitating the bubble. The Council plans to change zone provisions throughout the ward, with the intention of relaxing impediments to property development. The State Government is about to launch high density growth centres at Bowden and further “Transport Oriented Developments” along the Port Adelaide railway line. As the local MP Mick Atkinson points out, the majority of units in the Bowden TOD will be affordable by the upper income bracket latte set only

While there are compelling reasons for increasing densities in the area, to implement this riding on a wave of speculative frenzy is imprudent. Council could turn its attention to providing affordable rental housing as is the case in the UK – if the electors so decide.
